Numerous times I have been asked how my work environment looks like. Screenshots seem to be an important aspect to convey your usual environment to others. This is interesting, since the look is much less important to me than the feel. But here you are.
My normal work environment is Emacs. You can see here my normal setup with Emacs in console mode in screen in an rxvt-unicode terminal window, managed by the Ratpoison window manager. In the background, you can see my background image.
The other application besides Emacs that I use extensively is the Firefox web browser. I use the All-in-One Gestures, Tabbrowser Preferences, MozEX, Web Developer, mozcc and Adblock extensions.
The last big application I use regularily is The Gimp, an image manipulation program. Some people say that it’s impossible to use it in the Ratpoison window manager, but I found out it works quite well once you configure your Ratpoison a bit.
In our living room, we use DEC VT 510 serial terminals. They don’t have the annoying noise of a normal computer, and work quite well. And yes, they do provide only monochrome text mode.
